The methodology behind any new layout is simple, to get the product to “flow” through the factory as easily as possible, with the minimum amount of handling. It was generally found that as factories expand, and new workshops are built, the layout becomes haphazard, with unnecessary forklift trips. By re-arranging what is done in which workshop to minimise transport journeys between workshops, the efficiency of the flow from raw material to painted final product is greatly increased.
